Abstract

The increasing use by aircraft of data link communications as the preferred medium of information transfer for flight critical information such as weather and clearance, delivery raises a number of issues concerning the effects of this technology on pilot-controller communications. This paper compares voice and data link communications as information exchange media which support the human communication process. The potential impact on pilot-controller interactions of replacing voice communications with data link is discussed.
