Title: The Surface Area and Volume of the Hand
Abstract This article recounts our research on measuring the surface area of the human hand. The surface area is measured using a photometric technique. The change in illuminance in a specially constructed and calibrated light chamber is measured when a hand is placed in the chamber. The hand is clad in a black dyed latex glove. An equation was developed to predict the surface area of the hand, using easy to obtain hand dimensions as independent variables. Regression analysis was used to determine the significance of the independent variables. The analysis yielded an equation that can predict the surface area of the hand, using easily measured characteristics of the hand.
